The Philippines Republic Act 9513 “The Renewable Energy Act of 2008” was promulgated to support and encourage the use of Renewable Energy. The following are some of the benefits given to developers and users:

• Net metering scheme

Allows connection of solar power system to the utility (say Meralco) power grid. Whenever your solar energy system produces more than your consumption, the excess energy will be automatically exported to the utility(say Meralco) power grid which will be credited to your account. The credit will be used to offset your electricity consumption during the night from the utility grid (Meralco). If still there is excess credit, it will be used for the following months consumption.

• Duty free

When you import materials and components for solar energy power system, you are free of importation duty fees.

• Financing options

Government financial institutions like PAG-IBIG, SSS, Land Bank, DBP and others are extending financial loans for solar energy projects. Also, most private institutions like banks and cooperatives are offering low interest financing on these projects.

What are the types of solar energy system connections?

Grid-Tied/Grid-On Solar Energy System – a solar system that is connected to the utility power grid. A grid-connection will allow you to save more money with solar panels through better efficiency rates, net metering scheme, plus lower equipment and installation costs.

Grid-Off/Stand Alone Solar Energy System – An off-grid solar system (off-the-grid, standalone) is the obvious alternative to one that is grid-tied. To ensure access to electricity at (all times, off-grid solar systems require battery storage and a backup generator (if you live off-the-grid).

Hybrid Solar Energy System – Hybrid solar systems combines the best from grid-tied and off-grid solar systems. These systems can either be described as grid-off solar with utility backup power, or grid-tied solar with extra battery storage.

What are the usual maintenance issues of a solar power system?

Solar energy system is very easy to maintain just make a periodic washing with water preferably using pressurized water hose about at least once every 6 months to remove the build-up of thick dust and dirt. Keep the panels from shades or shadows of any object like trees as it affects the maximum efficiency of the system.

What is the typical household solar energy system package and how much is the savings?

Omni SolarPower, Inc. customizes your solar energy system based on your monthly consumption and budget. However, the usual solar energy package for a household is a three (3) kilowatt system which can power the following:

One (1) Large Refrigerator

A 3 KW Grid-tied Solar Energy System produces 450 KWH per month

This  saves approximately P5,000 monthly or P 60,000.00 annually.

Assuming a household  consumes  80% from the installed solar energy system and remaining is exported to the utility grid (say Meralco)

Computation:

Avoided cost for using solar  =  80% X 450 KWH = 360 KWH X (say) Php 13 (retail rate)= P 4,680

Utility Credit  = 20% X 450 KWH =    90 KWH X (say) Php  6(blended gen. cost)=       540

Total Monthly Savings=  5,220
